Wellman sweeps State of Iowa Sand Greens Championships

Posted

It was a beautiful weekend for the 27th annual State of Iowa Sand Greens Championship, hosted by the Wellman Golf Course.

It was especially good for the teams from Wellman, who swept both the men’s and women’s titles on Sunday, led by Josh Boone who shot a round of 61 on day two of the tournament.

Boone finished with a total of 133 strokes over the two days, eight strokes ahead of the field. Jill Mitchell finished ten strokes ahead of the nearest competitor, leading the Wellmen women with a two-day total of 155. Teri Taylor finished second.

Duncan McCain finished second in the men’s championship with rounds of 68 and 73. Kaleb Martin shot a 71 and 72 to finish third.

A downpour canceled Sunday play the last time the championship was hosted by Wellman in 2018, but the sun was out on both Saturday and Sunday this year.

The Wellman men finished with a total of 712, well ahead of Humeston with 745 and Malvern with 813. The Wellman women had a total of 688, Humeston was second with 743 and Malvern third with 785.

The tournament rotates between the three Iowa sand green courses. Every three years the Wellman Golf Course hosts the top eight men’s and women’s golfers from the Fairview Hills Golf Course in Malvern and the Humeston Lakeside Golf course.

“Everybody really is in unison, all three teams,” Wellman Golf Course board president Tracy Owens said. “You get to know the same faces year to year. It’s always special.”

Owens said that a lot of work went into preparing the course for the event.

“It takes a lot of hands to get this thing pulled off,” Owens said. “The board itself, I have to give a lot of props to, because 80 percent of them have done a lot of the work out here, but you have a lot of older members and some younger members that have really stepped up to do all the improvements this year.”

The Wellman Golf Course board includes Owens, Scott Slaubaugh, Shawna Huber, Brooke Bringman, Joey Patterson, Brandy Gholson, Shannon McCain, Corey Boone, and Trever Owens.

Tracy Owens said that membership numbers have gone up recently, possibly because people looked for more outdoor activities after the lockdowns and quarantines.

“In the last two years, we’ve picked up a ton of new members, which is great to see,” he said. “You’ve got a lot of new faces, younger groups coming out here.”
