In a brief meeting Monday night, the Wellman City Council took care of a bit of routine business and continued making headway on its city improvement projects.
The council approved a bridge inspection agreement with Calhoun-Burns & Associates, Inc. as a matter of course.
Progress continues on the Starbeck/Miller building downtown, which is being rehabilitated for a new business. Back in August, the city agreed to put $100,000 toward that work, contingent on the business receiving a Community Catalyst Building Remediation grant from the State of Iowa. On Monday, the council authorized the city to apply for the Catalyst grant.
The council also gave its approval to the city to apply for a Paint Iowa Beautiful grant, a program that provides free paint to a wide variety of public service projects throughout Iowa in partnership with Diamond Vogel. The city would repaint traffic and parking lines with the paint, and refresh the paint on equipment at North Park if they received sufficient quantity.
Also on the agenda was discussion and action on a quote from TrafficLogics for electronic speed signs for the city; however, this item was tabled after hearing from Washington County Sheriff Jared Schneider that grant options may exist for signs of this type. The city receives complaints about drivers entering town at high speeds and is interested in using signs to alert them to the lower speed limits on Highway 22 through the city.
