Wellman considers frisbee golf course

Posted

At Monday’s meeting, Wellman city council members agreed to study a proposal to build a frisbee golf course in the city’s North Park.

A plan was put together several years ago by an employee of the YMCA to construct a course in Wellman similar to one located in Sunset Park in Washington. However, the Wellman plan was put on hold, pending other business.

Mayor Ryan Miller said the projected cost for a nine-hole course for Wellman was projected to be $5,000. Council members agreed that the cost would probably not be significantly higher now and voted to pursue the project. If the project moves forward, council members would like to open the park this fall.

The Washington course, located in Sunset Park was opened in 1999 as a Par 54, 18-hole course. Washington’s course is listed on the Disc Golf Course Review web page, which helps it draw players and tournaments from around the state. The course is maintained by the Washington Parks and Recreation Department.

The Wellman course would also likely be maintained by its Parks and Recreation Department. Some members expressed the hope that the Wellman course could also draw players and their families to the community.

In other business, the city council approved three resolutions to update city ordinances and coordinate them with changes in state law. The council is also preparing the ordinances for a public hearing on Oct. 4.

Council members approved $2,600 for the purchase of a new slushy machine for the skating rink. It approved two annual reports and a Washington County TIF certification.

Following the adjournment of the meeting, council members conducted a work session on the criteria for the review and hire of a new manager for the skating rink.
