WACO tops Lone Tree to stay unbeaten

The Lone Tree football team was unable to slow down No. 10 WACO on Friday night as the undefeated, district-leading Warriors came away with a 55-22 win.

Lone Tree threw for 232 yards in the game and was only outgained by 36 total yards, but the Lions lost the turnover battle 3-0.

The Warriors (7-0) have had a huge turnaround from a 3-5 season last year. WACO defeated New London 7-0 last week, avenging 50-10 regular season and 52-6 postseason losses from the previous year. Lone Tree was a 42-6 winner at WACO last year.

“The thing that stood out the most to me was that their players clearly got to work in the weight room since last season,” Lone Tree coach Aaron Bohr said. “They were so much more physical than when we played them last year and they did a tremendous job of playing smart, mistake-free football. It isn’t easy to beat a team that doesn’t beat themselves.”

The Warriors completed just 3-of-8 passes for 83 yards on Friday, 61 of which came on a first-quarter touchdown pass from Isaac Oswald to Drew Diers. The Lions trailed 18-0 when Cade Shield found Cade Patterson for a 12-yard touchdown pass on fourth down.

WACO had a quick response with Simeon Reichebach scoring on a 31-yard touchdown run to push the lead back to 18. Reichenbach kicked a pair of field goals from 22 and 39 yards and also scored on a 55-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, finishing with 168 rushing yards on 13 carries.

Lone Tree scored again in the fourth quarter with Caden Smith taking a direct snap and powering his way across the goal line for a two-yard rushing touchdown. Joe Boxwell rushed for the two-point conversion to make the score 47-14.

Boxwell had 27 rushing yards on six carries and led the Lions defense with 4.5 tackles, while Smith and Patterson each had four.

Tyce Alt scored on a 39-yard touchdown throw from Ethan Bockelman in the fourth quarter, and Braden Viers ran it into the end zone for the two-point conversion.

“When games turn out the way last night’s did, you just want to see which guys are competing until the very end,” Bohr said on Saturday. “We are at the point in the season where injuries start to take their toll, so it was encouraging to see some of our young guys make plays at the end.”

Patterson finished with 11 receptions for 108 yards and one touchdown, he also threw for 48 yards and a score as well. Shield was 16-of-26 for 184 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also led the Lions with 36 rushing yards.

“Seniors Cade Patterson and Cade Shield have led the way for us all season long, and they did a terrific job again last night,” Bohr said. “ While we have had our ups and downs this season, we know we can always count on Cade and Cade to set the tone with their effort, intensity and attention to detail. We are lucky to have the class of seniors we do with Shield, Patterson, Tyler Bell and Will Kleckner, and with next Friday being senior night, we want to do everything we can to send them out as winners in their last home district game because they definitely deserve it.”

On senior night, Lone Tree (3-3) will host New London (2-3), who has lost three games in a row since a 71-18 win over Winfield Mt. Union. The Tigers suffered a 68-33 loss at Iowa Valley on Friday.
