Thanks to community for city award

Last Saturday Kalona City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh and Mayor Mark Robe presented special clocks (with plaques on the back) made by Schlabaugh & Sons to me and four others who were recipients of this year’s Kalona Community Awards. The other recipients were Peggy Kauffman; Anita Kanagy, commended for her work at Goodwin Dining Center; Kalona Sales Barn, represented by Kyle Mullet; and Pleasantview, represented by Executive Director Jeffrey K. Schmidt.

I felt humbled to receive the City’s award; my efforts are simply what I personally expect a good newspaper publisher and citizen of Kalona should be doing.

I appreciate the support of the subscribers and advertisers that make each week of The News possible.  As Schlabaugh pointed out in his presentation, I firmly believe a good newspaper makes a good community a better community.  And a good community deserves a great newspaper. To that end, the staff of The News works hard to produce a newspaper serving not only Kalona, but all communities in our circulation area, including Wellman, Riverside, and Lone Tree, as well as Richmond, Frytown, Joetown, and Sharon Center.

We strive to report the best of our communities.  We can’t ignore the bad news, but it is our aim to report the good things about our communities.

It is also our goal to publish the names and faces of as many people as possible in each issue as it is the people of these communities that are important. Reporting the news of schools, businesses, cities help to keep everyone informed.

We welcome your ideas and tips on people, events and businesses. Keep us informed so we can inform our communities.  Your help will help us make The News better. We invite you to celebrate National Newspaper week with us next week, Oct. 2 to 8.

I appreciate the honor and will work hard to continue to be worthy of this recognition.

The Kalona Fall Festival was a smashing success mainly due to a total community effort and with the leadership of Historical Village Managing Director Nancy Roth. Nancy did a great job of organizing all the activities and displays at the 50th Anniversary Kalona Fall Festival.

When Nancy put out the call for more volunteers being needed to make this year’s festival possible, the community responded.  This year’s use of wrist bands for entrance was also well accepted and beneficial. And there was a great crowd both days, even with Friday being dampened a little by intermittent showers.

Thanks to a total community turnout, this year’s festival was a great success.
