Supervisors approve redistricting map, precinct ordinance

Posted

In a unanimous vote on Tuesday, Jan. 11, the Washington County Board of Supervisors approved the county’s redistricting ordinance.

The new precinct map, reflecting population changes and increases since 2010, returned Richmond as second voting percent in District 2, moved Riverside to District 3, and eliminated the West Chester precinct in District 1. West Chester is now within the Wellman precinct.

The county population is now 22,654 with the largest gain in Kalona (2,747 in the incorporated area and 508 in the unincorporated portion).  A large part of that reflects the voluntary annexation of more than 600 acres that formerly were the Shiloh church property.

The unincorporated town of Richmond, whose long-time precinct closed in 2010, now has a population of 1,204. No location for in-person balloting was told.  State deadline for all redistricting approval in Iowa counties is January 15.

The board last week had held the first reading of the redistricting ordinance and after approving the second reading, waived the third reading.  The ordinance took effect January 11.
