At 8 a.m. the house was standing; by 10 a.m. it was reduced to a pile of rubble. The two-story house at 417 E Avenue, Kalona, survived for 123 years before being cleared away for something new on Monday.
Kalona Auto Parts, a NAPA retailer, purchased the property, along with its neighbor 411 E Avenue, in 2022 to build a new retail store location. Construction is expected to begin later this year.
The house on the second lot will also be demolished, although an exact date has not been set.
There are “a lot of unknowns right now,” said Loren Helmuth, owner of the business with father Lynn Helmuth.
Both houses were made available to local fire departments and law enforcement for training exercises before being leveled.
