Karen Alderson will present the October 30 program for the Iowa City Genealogical Society. She will review the history of adoption laws in Iowa, including the closing of records for adoptions finalized between July 4, 1941, to the mid-1970s and the retroactive closure of adoption record finalized before July 4, 1941.
Alderson will discuss the adaption of methods by which adoptees and birth families may obtain limited information about each other. Karen will also share some of her search strategies, including DNA familial matching.
Alderson has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in mathematics and library science from Upper Iowa University, a Master of Arts Degree in Librarianship from the University of Denver (CO). She obtained Iowa private investigator licensing in 1990 after locating (in less than 3 hours of work) the birth mother of an adoptee born in California in 1947. Her first case after obtaining PI licensing was locating the birth father for the same client.
