RIVERSIDE

Chase Schultz, a Highland senior forward, shuffled back to the 3-point line and drilled a long shot for 3.

He pumped his fists as he retreated back on defense.

The 3-pointer and a Schultz basket before that possession had trimmed Wapello’s lead from 13 points to 8 in last Friday night’s Southeast Iowa Super Conference game.

But that was as close as the Huskies got. They lost to the Indians, 51-43.

Schultz scored a season-high 18 points for Highland and was a power inside.

“Probably the best game so far this year,” Huskies head coach Bill Zywiec said of Schultz’s performance.

The loss was the fourth in a row for the Huskies, but Zywiec felt the team was getting close to getting a victory and turning their season around.

“I feel like we play hard on the defensive end,” he said. “I like these kids. Our energy is positive.”

Highland hosts Columbus at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The Huskies trailed by six points, 26-20, at halftime against Wapello, but the Indians held Highland to six points in the third quarter and took a 46-31 lead. A steal and layup by Highland’s Brenton Bonebrake made it a 6-point game, 49-43, with 16 seconds left. The Huskies simply ran out of time.

Drake Johnson scored 17 points and Sawyer Nelson had 14 points and 14 rebounds, leading Danville to a win over Highland last Saturday.

The Bears, who won their fifth straight game, outscored Highland 30-11 in the first half to take control. The Huskies were held to four points in the third quarter and were outscored 19-7 in the final quarter.

Nelson’s 14 rebounds helped the Bears pile up 43 total boards.

The loss was the fifth straight for Highland.
