Schrock leads area golfers in SEISC meet

The Hillcrest golfers played 18 holes for the first time this season during the Southeast Iowa Super Conference Championship meet in Fort Madison on Wednesday. They finished the front nine with 202 strokes, their second-best score of the season, and then improved by a stroke over the back nine to finish sixth out of 14 teams with a total of 403.

“London (Schrock) told the guys earlier this week that a couple of bad holes will not hurt us and not to look back,” Hillcrest golf coach Phil Schintler said. “That is what the guys did today.

“We all came out of the gates slow today and struggled with some poor shots early on. The guys were able to put those bad shots behind them and grind.”

Schrock earned second team all-conference honors with a total of 94 strokes at the Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course. He shot a 46 on the front nine and a 48 on the back nine to tie for 11th out of 71 individuals.

Highland’s Jamison Kasparek had 44 strokes over the back nine to finish with a score of 96 and a spot on the all-conference third team.

Highland coach Travis Riggan said that Kasparek rose to the level of the competition on Wednesday.

“Jamison was able to go out and keep the double and triple bogies off the scorecard,” he said. “(Kasparek) also played with a couple kids of his same caliber which helped with the mental side of the game.”

The Huskies finished ninth with 444 strokes, just ahead of Lone Tree with 449. The Lions finished 26 strokes ahead of 11th place Columbus.

New London’s Clayton Phillips finished four strokes ahead of his nearest competitor to earn medalist honors with a 78 and Van Buren was the conference champion with a total of 352.

Jace Rempel had five pars on the day, and for his rounds of 50 and 48, he received honorable mention for Hillcrest.

Despite shooting no pars on the day, Luke Schrock finished just one stroke behind the last spot for honorable mention with a total of 100.

“His score did not reflect how well he played,” Schintler said. “Alex Niemeyer continued to play better consistent golf with a pair of 61s and he made at least three putts today over 12 feet.

“Josiah Beachy, who has been struggling as of late, busted out of the slump scoring his best two nine-hole rounds of the year, a 55 and a 56. And he also carded his first two pars of the season as well.”

Peyton Yeggy was just two strokes away from honorable mention for the Huskies. He shot a 53 on the front nine and a 48 on the back to finish 30th individually with 101 strokes. Brock Schaedler shot 54 and 59 for a total of 113 and Isaac Black finished with 134 strokes.

Adam Knock shot a 49 on the front nine and finished with 105 strokes to lead Lone Tree. Joe Boxwell shot 52 and 55 to finish with 107.

“Adam and Joe have been steady performers as the season has progressed,” Lone Tree coach Jeremy Claussen said.

“The rest of the team struggled a bit more than they have recently. I had a conservative team goal of 440 in mind before the tournament. We ended up with a 449 which was close to my goal.”

The Lions were on pace for a total of 424 from holes 1-9, but they struggled on the back nine. Sebastian Jacque was the only Lion who shot a better score on the back nine, finishing with 61 and 55 for a total of 116. Oliver Altenhofen shot a 54 on the front nine and finished with 121 strokes, Dominic Graap shot 57 on the front and finished with 122.

The 18-hole meet was an experience that Claussen hopes to build on.

“We have a very young team, so gaining that experience of playing in a bigger event like this is only going to help moving forward,” he said. “Everybody that played in this years’ conference tournament is eligible to return next year, so I am expecting bigger and better things from this group in 2022.”
