Iowa City Regina Catholic struck for a 4-0 win over Mid-Prairie in the teams’ first River Valley South meeting of the season Monday.
The Regals, defeating the Golden Hawks for the fifth straight time over the last year, scored one run in the second inning, two runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth against Mid-Prairie freshman pitcher Alena Snider.
Snider also pitched out of a pair of bases-loaded jams.
The Golden Hawks and Regals played again Tuesday in Kalona with Regina holding on for a 4-2 win.
Linn-Mar & Alburnett
Tourney
The Golden Hawks battled four teams in the annual Linn-Mar and Alburnett Softball Tournament held last weekend, including host Linn-Mar, the second-ranked team in Class 5A.
Mid-Prairie lost to Linn-Mar 11-1 and Northeast 15-5 on Friday, the first day of the tournament. North Linn topped the Golden Hawks 9-8 and Lisbon defeated the Hawks 12-3 in the 15th-place game Saturday.
The Golden Hawks answered a three-run deficit against North Linn to turn it into a one-run game. After trailing 6-3, Mid-Prairie scored three runs in the fourth inning, two runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth.
Sophie Miller had a team-high 3 hits against North Linn, and Kadence Grout and Sophia Puttmann each had 2. Kyla Karnes hit a 2-run home run.
Karnes hit a double in the tournament opener against Linn-Marr.
Jersey Jergens had a team-high 2 hits against Lisbon.
Durant 9
Mid-Prairie 1
After spotting Mid-Prairie a 1-0 lead in the opening inning, Durant, ranked No. 5 in 2A, scored nine runs over six innings to defeat the Golden Hawks on June 26 in Durant.
Bailey Kraklio, a junior catcher, had a game-high 3 hits for Durant. Allison Toft added two hits.
Toft pitched a 4-hitter.
Grinnell 12
Mid-Prairie 0
Grinnell, which is ranked No. 12 in 4A, scored 12 runs in the first three innings of a game played June 24 in Grinnell and went on for a victory over the Golden Hawks.
Sophie Miller, Kyla Karnes and Sophia Puttmann had hits for the Golden Hawks.
Kylee Bond led Grinnell (20-3) with two hits and a home run.
3A Regional
The Golden Hawks are facing a road trip of more than two hours for the start of a Class 3A Regional Tournament on July 10.
The second round would be a bit closer, in West Liberty.
The Golden Hawks will face Roland-Story (11-12) in the opening round of the 3A Regionals at Erickson Park in Roland, which is located north of Ames.
If Mid-Prairie wins that game, it would likely play two days later at seventh-ranked West Liberty in the Region 7 semifinals.
