Prince of Peace brings Highland’s season to an end

Posted

Entering the first round of 1A postseason play the Huskies traveled to Monticello to face off against the Prince of Peace Irish on May 15.

After 80 minutes of play Highland would find themselves defeated by Prince of Peace with a final score of 5-2. This loss would eliminate Highland from the playoffs and bring an end to its season as a whole.

From the get go the Huskies found themselves in a hole, with the Irish scoring three goals in the first half. The score of 3-0 in Prince of Peace’s favor would carry over to the second half, but Highland would find a way to retaliate.

Highland as a team entered this game with six goals made on the season, with four of them coming in its first win of the season in the regular season finale, and they were able to increase their goal total yet again, scoring two goals against the Irish in the second half.

One of Highland’s goals came from senior Carlos Valenzuela, in what would be the final soccer match of his high school career. Valenzuela has not been able to play for most of this season due to injuries, this play-off game was just his second game played this year, but he was able to make an impact where it mattered most, in the scoring department.

Sophomore Jared Diaz scored the other goal for Highland in the second half. This goal by Diaz makes it back-to-back weeks in which he has put the ball in the back of the net and this brings up his goal total to three this year.

While Highland was able to score twice in the second half, Prince of Peace would not take this lightly, scoring two goals of their own to bring the score of the game to 5-2 and with no more goals scored after this score was reached this would end up being the final score of the game.

With this loss Highland’s season comes to an end with a 1-12 record. The Huskies will say farewell to its lone senior on the team, Valenzuela, and will look to build upon the offense they were able to find in the last five games of the season, scoring eight goals in those games after not scoring any in its first eight games, next year with its young budding team in tow.
