WASHINGTON
It’s that joyful time of year in which the leaves fall and we gather with others to give thanks for the various ways in which we’ve been blessed. Kicking off the season – and the public phase of their capital campaign – is PAWSgiving, a festive night of fundraising for PAWS & More animal shelter in Washington. You’re invited, and you don’t even need to bring a dish.
You may even go home with dessert.
On Saturday, Nov. 9, join fellow animal lovers and PAWS supporters from 5-8 p.m. at Dallmeyer Hall on the Washington County Fairgrounds. A $20 ticket gets you a down-home supper of pulled pork and cheesy potatoes with fruit and live music by Banjoy. There will also be a live auction with Dwight Duwa where you’ll have the opportunity to bid on tasty desserts and a variety of gift baskets.
Why take advantage of this opportunity to give to PAWS & More? Because it’s fun, of course, but also because the animal shelter needs your help to raise the last 20% of funds needed for a new shelter building. As of October, they have raised $3.3 milllion of the $4.2 million needed from major donors, including the Washington County Riverboat Foundation, which awarded PAWS $2.4 million in grant funds this year.
Construction is expected to begin Spring 2025 on a new facility on the southwest side of Washington that will double the size of the current shelter; provide healthy air flow, safety, and care to the animals; and include walking paths and all-season gathering places so that everyone can interact with the animals.
“We are planning to plant lots of trees with walking trails and sitting areas for the community to enjoy,” director Amber Talbot told The News in an email. “Since we are leaving Sunset Park, we want to create a nice walking and gathering space for all.”
The new location should be ready for animals, staff, and the community to enjoy about a year from groundbreaking.
Tickets to PAWSgiving are still available; purchase them from the PAWS & More website, Facebook or at the door. Reserved tickets can be picked up at the shelter before the event or at the door.
For those who cannot attend but wish to support PAWS, “We always except gifts via PayPal, website, Venmo, checks in the mail, or in-kind donations at the shelter,” Talbot says.
