Pat and Krista Gent have been raising pigs from wean to finish on their family farm in Wellman for over a decade, doing everything from grinding feed and hauling pigs to marketing. At the Iowa Pork Congress banquet on Jan. 22 in Des Moines, they were honored as 2024 Master Pork Producers, alongside nine other pig farms.
The prestigious award recognizes individuals and families who excel in pork production, as demonstrated by outstanding production practices, commitment to We Care principles, and meaningful contributions to their communities. We Care principles emphasize the responsibilities of pig farmers to uphold the highest standards in animal care, food safety, environmental stewardship, and ethical practices.
Through the award, the Iowa Pork Producers Association and Iowa State University celebrate the character, dedication, and impact of Iowa’s pork producers, showcasing the vital role they play in agriculture and their communities. The program began in 1942; over 1,500 Iowa pig farming businesses have since been named.
Pat has been a pig farmer as well as member of the Washington County Pork Producers board for twelve years, serving as both treasurer and president. Krista book keeps for the farm and helps with planting and harvesting. They have five children, whom they hope will continue pig farming if they wish.
“The goal here is to leave the farm in a better place so that if they have any desire, they’ll be able to do the things that our parents gave us the ability to do,” Pat said.
Environmental sustainability is a top priority for the farm. All family-owned sites feature solar panels to reduce their environmental impact. Manure is the primary fertilizer source, providing essential nutrients for their crops, which are used to feed the pigs. They employ strip-till and reduced tillage methods to minimize soil disturbance, enhancing sustainability on their crop operation.
Other 2024 Master Pork Producers awarded were Brad Meyer of Rock Rapids, Chad and Renee Adams of Monticello, Doug Gruver of Sully, Jeremy Ahlers or Remsen, Josh and Megan Volante of Clutier, Kevin and Devin Lux of Cherokee, Matt and Michelle Thoma of Independence, Mike and Megan Loecke of Manchester, and Jake Knepper of Jesup (posthumously).
“The Master Pork awards showcase the best of pork production, celebrating those who are driven by passion and committed to feeding the world a safe, high-quality protein,” Brielle Smeby, IPPA Producer Outreach Director, said. “As the top pork producing state, Iowa’s success comes from our hardworking producers who face challenges head-on and continue to set the bar for excellence in the industry.”
