Lines that stretched longer than some people had ever seen them formed on Saturday morning, April 5, from the Kalona Fire Department and down around the post office. Folks flocked to the all-you-can-eat breakfast fundraiser and enjoyed their fill of pancakes. Fifteen hogs were butchered to provide the sausage locals love, and 8,640 eggs were on hand to make sure every tummy left full – and there were 3,223 tummies to fill. Just how much does it cost to outfit Kalona’s volunteer firefighters? $21,030 each, diners discovered; an outfitted mannequin gave them a visual.
