For a quick morning treat, stop by the Kalona Coffee House at 425 B Avenue. They offer iced coffees, frozen drinks and baked goods. Their seasonal specials are Almond Joy, Minty Meltdown, White Russian, Matcha Latte, and Lavender Matcha Latte. Any drink can be customized, you can swap in different milk alternatives or add a syrup flavor to enhance your drink! Baked goods like scones, cookies and bars are all freshly baked by the Rolling Pin. The Kalona Coffee House is the optimal morning stop to start off a great day. They are open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, and 7a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.
If you’re looking to try some more sweets, stop by Kalona Chocolates. Located at 211 5th Street, this shop offers a variety of chocolate flavors. Take a look inside and watch the process of making chocolate through a glass door. They are always serving free chocolate samples. Kalona Chocolate sells just about anything covered in chocolate, from gummy bears to potato chips. They are open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day, excluding Sundays.
After all those sweet treats, perhaps you’re ready for something salty. One classic lunch spot is the Kalona General Store & Eatery at 121 5th Street. If you are looking for Amish-authentic foods, this is the place to be. On Friday, they will be offering Amish style beef and noodles with corn and chocolate pudding all for $9.99 On Saturday, they will be serving smoked brisket with sides also for $9.99. After you eat, you can wander around the store for more delightful snacks. Be on the lookout for squeaky cheese curds, Amish-style noodles, and any knick-knacks to take home with you. The Kalona General Store is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day, excluding Sundays and lunch is served from 10:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.
Another great lunch spot that also includes some browsing is JW’s Deli. Located at 122 E Avenue, JW’s offers delicious foods for a good deal. They’ve got chicken, sandwiches, pizza, wings and ice cream. If you are looking for some breakfast, they also offer morning meals till 11 a.m.. After eating, you can grab some groceries or some snacks for the ride home. JW’s has created a great community since 1973. JW’s is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day, excluding Sunday.
For an icy afternoon treat, head over to Yotty’s Ice Cream Shop. Yotty’s is a town favorite during the warm months, but you might want to get there before the line piles up! Looking for some classic soft serve with more toppings than you can count, they’ve got it. Or maybe you’re looking for an icy drink, they’ve got it. From root beer floats, malt shakes and soft serve, you can count on Yotty’s to have just about anything. You’ve probably heard of the Kalona Bar, but if you haven’t — it’s a must to try, vanilla ice cream covered in chocolate and graham cracker crumbs. They are open 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday, and 12 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Sundays, located on 501 B Avenue.
Another lunch stop for a diverse palate, look out for Tequila Grill. The menu is packed to the brim with authentic Mexican dishes. Burritos, tacos, quesadillas, you name it! Tequila Grill is also a great dinner stop, and if you’re looking to have a few drinks, you will be delighted by their variety of margaritas (and if you’ve brought the kids, they can enjoy a virgin margarita!) If you aren’t full after their delicious meals, they also have dessert. Tequila Grill is located on 125 4th Street, open from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays.
After a long day and a rumbling stomach, take a trip to the Brewery for a relaxing dinner. The Kalona Brewing Company is located on 405 B Avenue, and offers classic dishes like pizza, salad, soup and sandwiches. Their wood-fired pizza is most certainly a favorite. With hand-tossed, handmade dough, you can add just about any topping to your pizza. Be sure to ask your waiter/waitress if there are any specials of the evening. If you need to wash down some of your food and the adventures of the day, order from the Brewery’s large menu of beers. The Kalona Brewing Company is open Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday from 11 a.m.-8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m..
One more great place for some authentic Mexican food is Los Amigos Taqueria, located on 109 1st Street. Los Amigos is a new addition to Kalona’s long list of appetizing food stops. Like Tequila Grill, Los Amigos serves up a packed menu of mouth-watering meals. You can start off with an appetizer or go straight to the main course! Anything you eat at Los Amigos; you are guaranteed to walk out with a satisfied stomach. They are open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
The last stop on this list is somewhat of an iconic spot in Kalona. Tuscan Moon is an Italian style restaurant located on 203 5th Street. They offer a dinner and lunch menu with several traditional Italian dishes. If you’ve got a soft spot for pasta, this is the place to be. Tuscan Moon has just about anything you or your kids can enjoy. They are open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
You can also stop by Best of Iowa, located at 111 5th St. downtown Kalona. They have a variety of locally made treats such as cinnamon rolls, bread, cupcakes and more!
