An injury forced last-minute changes to the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays for the Mid-Prairie girls during the first meet of the season on Thursday.
But the late adjustments did not prevent the Golden Hawks from taking first place in both events by a wide margin in the Mount Pleasant Co-ed at Maple Leaf Stadium.
Sophomore Ella Groenwold was penciled in with the 4x400, but joined Amber Swart, Maddie Edgington, and Amara Jones in the 4x100 instead after an injury to Alyssa McDowell.
The new combination of sprinters finished over two seconds ahead of second-place Ottumwa with a time of 51.74. A time which would have been good for 11th place at the 2A state meet in 2019.
“It was really cool to see that two teammates are willing to jump in. I didn’t hear any sort of selfish talk come out of that,” Mid-Prairie coach Chris Tyler said. “They’re more than willing to jump in and do what the team needed them to do. And they performed pretty well at it.”
Groenwold also set a new personal best in the high jump with a second-place jump of 5-02.
Mitzi Evans led the 4x400 relay to a first-place finish of 4:29.83. Evans finished second in the 800-meter run and won the 400-meter dash while setting a new school record of 59.32.
“She’s put in a tremendous amount of time in the offseason training for the for this part of the season,” Tyler said. “She’s hungry, you know, missing last season and not being able to showcase her talent. She’s ready to get going.”
Freshman Annika Poll took Groenwold’s spot in the 4x400, joining Evans, sophomore Maya Nonnenmann and freshman Behla Schmidt. They finished over 16 seconds ahead of Davenport Assumption in second place.
“A very young group there and just gutsy,” Tyler said. “Each leg of that race they finished incredibly hard. On those 400s, with inexperienced runners it’s easy to go out too fast and then not have much left in the tank for that final homestretch. But all four of them just ran incredibly smart.”
Senior Ana Fleming finished second in the 1500-meter run with a time of 5:28.56.
Fleming was a member of four state championship cross country teams, but injuries have kept her from running a 1500-meter race since she was a freshman.
“She’s worked hard to get where she’s at, and the persistence that she’s shown to just keep training after everything she’s been through the first three seasons – it has been awesome to see,” Tyler said.
Tori Boyse finished second in a field of 27 throwers with a shot put of 35-05 and fourth in the discus with a throw of 106-03.
