MUSCATINE

A windy and often wet golf season was accurately defined by the conditions facing golfers at the River Valley Conference boys tournament played May 3 at Muscatine Muncipal.

No matter. Mid-Prairie sophomore Drew Schlabaugh scored a personal best 88 over 18 holes and won All-Conference Honorable Mention honors.

Two other Golden Hawks, Ben Mattes and Carson Pence, also scored personal bests.

“I am proud of how they fought through the tough conditions,” Mid-Prairie coach Kelby Bender said. “They kept grinding, never complained and gave their best effort.”

Schlabaugh tied for 18th place, making par on six holes and scoring a birdie on the par-5 18th hole. He shot 40 over the front nine holes, joining six other golfers to score 40 or lower on the front nine.

“He struggled in the middle part of his round, but finished with three pars, three bogeys and a birdie in his last seven holes,” Bender said.

Mattes, a junior, carded a personal best 44 over the front nine. His 18-hole score of 96 was also a personal best as he scored three pars and seven bogeys.

Pence, a sophomore, had a personal best score of 117.

Mid-Prairie junior Warren Scarff had four pars and eight bogeys in his round of 95. Ian Schmidt, a senior, carded 116.

West Branch, led by medalist Dylan Countryman and the next two top finishers on the leaderboard, won the team title with a score of 310. Countryman carded a 75, and was followed by teammates Brady Knoop (76) and Will Bridges (77).

The Golden Hawks carded a season-best score of 187 over the front nine holes and finished with a score of 395, finishing in last place.

“It was a day of mixed results,” Bender said. “We struggled a little on the back nine, which is longer and played harder in the conditions. The RVC is a very good golf conference and if you don’t have four good scores you will get beat. We just needed one more good score and we would have been in the middle of the conference.”

Next up for the Golden Hawks is a Class 2A sectional tournament Wednesday at Tipton Golf & Country Club. The top two or three teams, and top two individuals who are not a part of an advancing team, will qualifying for the May 16 district tournament in Mediapolis.

Mid-Prairie Triangular

Warren Scarff and Drew Schlabaugh each shot 51, leading the Golden Hawks in a triangular meet against Durant and Hillcrest held Monday at Kalona Golf Course.

Mid-Prairie had a team total of 221, finishing second to Durant’s 192. HIllcrest finished with a 225.

Jace Rempel led Hillcrest with a 48.

Elliot Fortin of Duran won medalist honors with a 44. Teammate Cooper Hustin carded a 48.

Schlabaugh had a team-best two pars.

Ben Mattes carded a 54 for Mid-Prairie and Carson Pence shot 65. Mattes finished his round strongly with three bogeys and a par.

“The temperature (80s) and sun were nice to play in, but the 20-30 mph winds caused some problems,” Mid-Prairie coach Kelby Bender said. “The course played firmer and faster than it has played all year, then add in the wind, and the scores were higher today.”

Liam Schrock carded a 54 for Hillcrest and scored a birdie on the par-3 8th hole. Alex Niemeyer added a 61, Josiah Beachy shot 62 and Luke Schrock had a 68.
