The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks hosted the Wilton Beavers for a doubleheader on Monday, June 3. The Hawks dropped both games to the Beavers, losing game one 7-3 and game two 10-2. The two losses dropped Mid-Prairie to 3-5, while Wilton rose to 8-4.

Despite lopsided scoring, game one started competitive. Wilton opened the scoring with an opening inning run. Mid-Prairie then tied it in the third before taking a 3-1 lead in the fourth.

The Hawks lone lead of the doubleheader was short-lived.

Wilton scored four runs in the top of the fifth to reclaim the lead, up 5-3. Wilton added two more runs in the final frame as the Golden Hawks went quietly in the bottom of the seventh, dropping game one.

The Hawks, despite losing game one, kept things close and saw a glimmer of hope entering game two.

Wilton squashed this hope quickly in game two, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning against rising freshman Alena Snider who started game two after Mid-Prairie’s ace, Kadence Grout, pitched in game one.

Mid-Prairie would score one run in the bottom of the first, but a theme emerged: the Hawks struggled to bring runners home.

Snider settled after the four-run first, pitching two quiet innings before rising senior Dakota Mitchell smacked a homerun over the left-center field wall to cut the lead in half.

The Mid-Prairie bats then calmed, and the innings began to fly by. When the top of the sixth rolled around, the Hawks found themselves in trouble once again. Wilton rallied and found pockets to sneak the ball past the Mid-Prairie defense, scoring five runs to give Wilton the 9-2 edge.

Wilton would add their final run of the night in the top of the seventh as Mid-Prairie stranded one runner in the bottom of the seventh, losing the game.

This is already Mid-Prairie’s third loss to the Wilton Beavers who sit at second place in the River Valley South division. Mid-Prairie is ranked fifth of seven teams within that division.

Mid-Prairie will host the Tipton Tigers on Thursday, June 6, before hosting the Regina Regals for a doubleheader on Monday, June 10. On Tuesday, June 11, the Hawks will travel to Mt. Vernon to face off against the No. 5 ranked Mount Vernon Mustangs.
