Mid-Prairie girls rank first, boys sixth, in RVC championship meet

Yet another runaway first place finish for the Mid-Prairie girl’s track & field squad. Of 19 events, they placed first in five with junior Danielle Hostetler, easily securing first in the 1500-meter run yet again with a time of 4:55.15, a full 15 seconds ahead of second place. Hostetler also ranked first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:20.43.

Senior, Ella Groenewold, secured a season personal record with yet another first-place high jump finish, clearing a five-foot-three jump. Last year, she had a five-foot-four jump.

Senior, Tabitha Evans, ranked first-place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.25. Hostetler, Groenewold, and Evans were the individual gold earners for Mid-Prairie, more than enough to score 128 points, 47 points ahead of Tipton in the overall rankings.

The girls only participated in three relay events, ranking first in the 800-medley relay with a time of 1:50.68, two seconds ahead of Maquoketa. They ranked second in the 4x100 meter shuttle hurdle relay with a time of 1:09.86, two seconds behind Cascade. The team ranked fifth place in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 10:51.11, a minute behind Tipton who ranked first.

So far this season, the girls have ranked first-place in every meet they have attended with the exception of one, their meet on April 25, in Anamosa. Even at this meet, they weren’t running with a full team, likely due to the Drake Relays happening in the ensuing days. They also technically ranked 13th place at the Newton Invite, yet no Hawks attended this meet since they hosted their own at home.

What makes the Hawks such a dangerous Track & Field team to go up against, is the fact that they run very deep. The top seven finishers earn points and the Hawks finished top seven in 12 of 15 events. The only events they failed to earn points in was the 400-meter dash, the 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles. There were four events the Hawks simply did not compete in.

Doing exceptionally well in the River Valley Conference (RVC) Outdoor Championship is not something new for the Golden Hawks. Last year, the meet was held in Monticello and Mid-Prairie scored a dominant 149 points, 62 points ahead of second place, securing the top spot.

The girls track & field team last year ranked third in state with two of the top medal earners on the Hawk squad (Hostetler and former senior, Mitzi Evans).

The Hawks will travel to Tipton again on Thursday, May 11, for state qualifiers. The atmosphere at this meet was already explosive. Expect their state qualifying meet to exceed in pressure as the Hawks look for consecutive first-place finishes in Tipton.

MP Boys

The Mid-Prairie boys track & field team ranked sixth place at the RVC Outdoor Championship in Tipton. They scored 51 points, tied with West Branch, and were 46 points behind Anamosa in first with 97. The closest the boys came to ranking first was a second-place finish by sophomore, Emmett Swartzentruber, in the 3200-meter run. He got a time of 10:18.95, about 11 seconds behind Tipton’s Clay Bohlmann in first.

Sophomore, Jayse Yoder, also had a good day on the track, ranking second in the 800-meter run with a 2:02.09 time and fourth in the 1600-meter run with a 4:46.26 finish.

Sophomore, Jayden Stafford, had another great showing here, ranking first in each of the wheelchair events. Stafford is coming off of a first-place finish in the 400-meter wheelchair race at the Drake Relays where he faced real competition. Here, he raced alone, still racking up good finish times to continue his impressive year.

The Hawks participated in two relay events, placing third in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 8:40.77, 28 seconds out of first. They ranked 15 in the 800-medley relay with a 1:50.31 time.

They too, will return to Tipton for the state qualifying meet this Thursday for a chance at qualifying. They will hope to earn a better spot in the rankings and will hopefully have senior, Cain Brown, in attendance to help them out. Brown earned a third-place finish at the Drake Relays with a six-foot-nine high jump. His presence was surely missed here.
