Mid-Prairie girls finish second in Williamsburg

Posted

The Mid-Prairie girls got major point contributions from sprints, throws, and distance runners on the way to a second-place finish out of 13 teams at the Williamsburg Co-ed Invitational on Tuesday.

The Golden Hawks had first place finishes from Maddie Edgington in the 100-meter, Mitzi Evans in the 800-meter and Ana Fleming in the 3000, while Tori Boyse was second in the discus and third in the shot put.

Edgington also ran the lead off leg for the first-place sprint medley, which included Evans, Amara Jones and Amber Swart. The Golden Hawk 4x100-meter relay was edged by Williamsburg by one-hundredth of a second for first-place while running the third-fastest time in 2A so far this season.

Edgington said that some of the Mid-Prairie runners ran regularly during the winter on days with open gym.

“Amber (Swart) and I have been running in those with our whole group,” she said. “And we’ve kind of been breaking down our technique rather than strenuous activity. And I think just going back to the mechanics, that’s what’s really helped us. And you can tell all of us sprinters have really improved. I’ve just been working on my quick twitch muscle stuff rather than pushing myself too hard. And I think it’s really paying off.”

The Golden Hawks had two of the top three finishers in the 100-meter dash with Swart finishing third and Edgington coming in first with a time of 13.27.

“I haven’t ran one since sophomore year, so I was kind of nervous,” Edgington said. “I didn’t really go in with high hopes, but I guess I surprised myself. I felt good.”

Fleming wasn’t necessarily ecstatic with her first-place time of 11:40 in the 3000-meter race, but she enjoyed crossing the finish line with the lead.

“Yeah, I mean, I wish I could have been faster,” she said, then smiling, “but, it’s a lot of fun to win races.”

Evans also got to enjoy a win in the 800-meter run. Her time of 2:20.38 is the fastest in 2A so far this season.

Abby Fleming finished second in the 1500-meter run and Jones was third in the 400-meter hurdles.

The Mid-Prairie boys finished sixth out of 12 teams, led in points by Clarke Latcham, who finished second in the 110-meter hurdle race and third in the 400-meter hurdles.

Cain Brown won the high jump, equaling his best jump of the outdoor season at 6-04. He nearly tied the school record at 6-06, getting his torso and hips over the bar before barely brushing it with his calf on the way down.

The Mid-Prairie boys also finished first in the 4x400-meter relay. Will Cavanagh, Jamie Stutzman, Latcham and Caleb Thomas finished two seconds ahead of second-place Grinnell with a time of 3:38.28. The same quartet also finished second in the distance medley.
