This weekend, December 10 through 12, the Mid-Prairie High School Choir held their annual Madrigal Dinner. A night of singing, dancing, and acting all topped off with a five-course meal. The show is an extraordinary display of the Mid-Prairie Fine Arts phenomenal talents.
At the beginning of the night, guests are welcomed to their seats by the King and Queen, played by seniors Sam Harris and Liv Caskey. The King and Queen are chosen by the Royal Court, a group of highest honors received by auditioning for a carefully selected court. The Royals are all leaders of their own, displaying responsibility, directive, and accountability, with many of the choir looking up to them for guidance.
Among the cast, are the beggars, students dressed up — or dressed down — covered in cocoa powder and rags to appear “dirty”. The audience is suggested to throw coins, and if the beggars hear a dime drop, they will scatter for it.
Along with the King Harris and Queen Caskey keeping the night flowing, is the play cast. This year performing, “Little Fools in Love”. The Jester, the beloved storyteller and entertainer of the night is played by junior, Micaela Ghumm. In between songs, the cast performs little snippets of dialogue to the story. The play cast of characters are Robin (Grace Puttmann), Harmonia (Isabel Forbes), Discordio (Chris Burnham), and Out-of-Tunio (Haydon Bailey).
Many alumni remember their time singing “A Boar’s Head” or “Wassail”, which are both yearly songs, but all other arrangements are selected by Choir Director, Collette McClellen.
Towards the end of the evening, the Royal Court sang a few songs to bid the guests adieu — songs that have been practiced since late September by the Royals. Besides Caskey and Harris as the King and Queen, the court is made up of fourteen other students. Avery Slaubaugh, Terra Richardson, Ethan Bontrager, Grace Conway, Kaden Meader, Alivia Poock, Thaddeus Shetler, Phoebe Shetler, Mia Garvey, Alex Burnham, Essie Martin, Kenadi Fay, Jarrett TeBockhoerst, Isadora Goode, and Logan McClellen.
