TIPTON
The day began with another win in the shot put by Mid-Prairie’s Burke Berry.
Then, a win by senior Emmett Swartzentruber in the 3200-meter run. He also finished second in the 1600. All in the same afternoon and evening.
By the time the night was over last Thursday in Tipton, the Golden Hawk boys track team had not only won a River Valley Conference team championship, adding to the team title won by the Mid-Prairie girls, but they won it by a crushing 46 points over runner-up Anamosa.
Mid-Prairie captured wins in four events, placed second in three events and was third in four events.
Swartzentruber and Preston Yutzy finished one-two in the 3200, setting up distance domination heading into Thursday’s state qualifier and district meet at Monticello. They are ranked third and fifth, respectively, in Iowa 2A.
The Golden Hawks had two victories in relay events, the 1600 medley and 4x200, and added a second-place finish in the 4x100 and a third-place finish in the 4x800 that featured Emmett Swartzentruber and Yutzy again, along with Emmett’s younger brother, Max, and Thomas Flynn.
Berry, who is ranked second in the state in the shot put, won the event with a toss of 56.25 feet. Teammate Tommy Miller placed fourth.
Ryan Henry had a third-place finish in the 100 with a time of 11.41 seconds, and Jayse Yoder added a third-place finish in the 800 and Kaden Kos was third in the discus.
Other Top Five finishes included Josh Turner, fourth in the high jump; Thomas Lueck, fourth in the long jump; and Carson Humphrey, fifth in the 110 hurdles.
The victory doubled up River Valley titles for the Golden Hawks. They also won the indoor championships in March.
