Mediapolis scores four in the first, holds off Hillcrest 6-2

The Hillcrest Ravens were unable to come back from an early four-run deficit in a 6-2 loss at Mediapolis.

Mediapolis put the first four batters on base with three hits and a walk, but the Ravens were in position to limit the damage to two runs after throwing out a runner and getting a strikeout.

Hillcrest got the ground ball that it needed, but a throwing error allowed the lead to double.

Grant Bender and Eli Ours each had a single in the seventh inning, and London Schrock was hit by a pitch to load the bases, which brought the tying run to the plate.

Luke Schrock hit a ground ball towards left, but it hit Ours advancing towards third for the final out.

“It was not the start you wanted, especially against a good team,” Hillcrest coach Danny Hershberger said. “We kind of dug ourselves a hole there. And you know, we made it tough, and it was kind of uncharacteristic of us, but I thought our guys did a good job of competing and having good at bats, trying to get ourselves back in the game.”

Bulldog starters Jaxon Brooks allowed one earned run on two hits and four walk while striking out 12. London Schrock had both of those hits and drove in both Raven runs.

“We know that this is a good team, and we’ve got to play good to beat them,” Schrock said.

His double to right field scored Ours in the third inning, and a two-out single scored Bender in the fifth.

“I was just looking for a pitch to drive,” Schrock said. “I got lucky, I guess… just going out there looking to hit the ball in play, and make them work to get me out.”

Ours settled down after a tough first inning, and allowed three earned runs on nine hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out six. Ours had a hit, walked twice and scored a run.

Defensively, Noah Miller and Liam Schrock each made tough catches on long fly balls.

“I think we settled down and locked in mentally on defense,” Hershberger said. “I thought our guys had great at bats. We were patient. We were getting our pitches to hit, drawing some walks and we're able to put some pressure on running the bases. We're able to keep ourselves in the game that way.”

Louisa-Muscatine 5, Hillcrest 4

Hillcrest was unable to protect a four-run lead in a 5-4 loss to Louisa-Muscatine on Tuesday. The Ravens scored the game’s first runs in the fourth inning to go up 4-0, but left the bases loaded. That came back to hurt them as the Falcons scored a pair of unearned runs in the seventh to steal the victory.

Jace Rempel’s double scored Luke Schrock and Josiah Beachy, who led off the fourth inning with a walk and a single. After a pitching change, Noah Miller drove in a run with a one-out single and Eli Ours was hit by a pitch to score a run.

With an infield fly and a groundout, L-M was able to limit the damage in the fourth and came back with three runs in the next inning.

Liam Schrock drew three walks, was 3 for 3 stealing bases, and scored a run for Hillcrest.

The Ravens had a seventh-inning lead in each of their first two losses.
