Lone Tree girls finish third at Pankoke Relays

The warm temperature and perfect conditions at the Pankoke Relays on Thursday were a first for the Lone Tree girls track team during this cold and windy spring.

But the top-three finish was not.

With 75 points, the Lady Lions took third-place in the eight-team meet hosted by Winfield Mt. Union — Lone Tree’s fifth top-three finish in six meets.

This season’s success is especially enjoyable for the Lone Tree seniors, who saw their sophomore season canceled in 2020, and competed for a team that struggled to score 30 points last year.

“It just feels really good to finally have a team where we all work together and we have someone that pushes us every single practice,” said senior Lexi Norris, who gave credit to Lone Tree’s first-year coach Chad Shield. “Chad has been just amazing. And he holds really high expectations for us, but it helps us so much.”

Senior Kasey Chown gave the Lady Lions some early points with a second-place finish in the high jump — and the Lone Tree freshmen made their usual contributions.

Rylee Shield set a new personal record with a first-place time of 1:03.50 in the 400-meter dash and took fourth in the 200. Avery Morarie was third in the long jump with a leap of 14-3.25 and Vivan Zaruba was fourth in the 800-meter run with a season-best time of 2:40.

“Their positive attitudes are amazing,” Norris said about the Lone Tree freshmen. “They just go out and they just do their best and they're just amazing. They've been really good for us.”

Chown, Shield, Zaruba and Arlie Lorack won the sprint medley with a season-best time of 2:00.22. And the 4x100 of Lorack, Chown, Morarie and Shield finished second.

Lone Tree set new season best times in four relays on Thursday with the favorable conditions.

“Oh my goodness, I was so happy because we've had very bad weather,” said Norris, who ran the 400-meter leg of the third-place distance medley. “ But this weather really helps us out, we're all PRing and that’s really nice with districts coming up.”

Avery Lisk finished fifth in the long jump and Alex Dautremont was sixth in the discus with a season best of 74-5. Freshmen Hayden Yoder and Sami Branson each set new bests in shot put with throws of 28-4.5 and 27-9.5, taking seventh and eighth. Sophomores Lila Bell and Lilly Mills also finished seventh and eighth in the 1500 with season best times of 6:49 and 6:50.

The Lone tree boys finished fifth at WMU with 63 points, led by a pair of second place finishes from Ethan Willoz and Ethan Bockelman in the 110-meter hurdle and 400-meter dash.

Lone Tree finished 2-3 in the 110-meter hurdles with Cade Patterson finishing just a hair behind Willoz with times of 17.64 and 17.67. Bockelman set a new season best in the 400 with a time of 57.01.

The Lone Tree shuttle hurdle of Willoz, Jader Bajaras, Drew Gauley and Patterson finished second with a time of 1:08.19. Kyle Anderson ran Lone Tree’s fastest 100-meter dash of the season with a fourth-place time of 12.03. Tyce Alt finished fifth in the 200 with a season-best time of 24.90 and Gauley was fifth in the long jump.

Willoz was sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a new season best of 1:06.05 and Braden Viers ran a new season low in the mile with a sixth place finish of 5:51. Bajaras was sixth in the long jump with best leap of the season at 17-10.75.
