Lone Tree bats quiet at Danville

The Lions scored the first run of Wednesday’s game on back-to-back doubles from Tyler Bell and Matt Hemsted in the fourth inning, but that lead was short lived as Danville came back for a 4-1 win.

The Bears’ freshman ace, Jaden Bauer, allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out 12 over 6 and 1/3 innings. The Lions went down in order in each of the final three innings.

A leadoff double, a pair of walks, and an error helped the Bears score four runs in the fifth. Two runs crossed the plate on wild pitches.

While a few mistakes helped out the Danville offense, Lone Tree coach Mike Close was most frustrated with the Lions’ offensive approach.

“We just didn’t do enough ourselves,” he said. “We just didn't show up today, so that's the disappointing part. We didn't play to our potential.”

Gavin Pourroy allowed just three hits through the first four innings. The Lions made plays to strand a runner at third base in the second and third innings. The Bears got a leadoff single in the fourth inning, but Hemsted threw out the base runner trying to take second.

“We were able to keep ourselves in the game,” Close said, “but we didn't give ourselves enough chances and that's the ballgame in a nutshell right there.”

Pourroy allowed three runs on five hits and one walk over four innings.

Hunter Hain had a single in the third inning. Drew Gauley drew a two-out walk and stole second base, but the Lions could not come up with a key hit until the fourth.
