Light turnout at off-year Caucus for Kalona, Richmond Republicans

Posted

There was a relatively light turnout for the Kalona and Richmond Precinct caucus held at Mid-Prairie East Elementary school cafeteria on Monday evening, Feb. 7.

Merle Miller and Scott Williams were elected caucus chair and secretary respectively. Those attending also were given the opportunity to sign petitions for the Republicans running for the various Iowa Legislature, Governor, State offices and 1st District Congressional district and U. S. Senate seat for the June 7 Republican Primary.

The caucus attendees voted to accept planks for the county convention proposed by Jim Crowther and Vickie Hodgeman.  Crowther proposed a plank calling for a presidential line veto and a plank calling for an end to ear marks and quid pro quo in the U. S. Congress, House and Senate. He also spoke in favor of term limits and a convention of states.

Hodgeman proposed a plank calling for banning of mandates for vaccinations. She said people should have the right to decide if they wanted to be vaccinated or not.

Crowther, Laura Bush and county supervisor Bob Yoder volunteered to represent the Kalona Precinct in the county convention which will be held from 9  a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 12, at the YMCA building in Washington.

Presley Hora was selected as a Junior Delegate to represent Kalona precinct.  David Hodgeman served as the Richmond Precinct caucus chair.

District convention will be March 26 at a site yet to be selected and the State convention will be June 11.

Heather Hora, House District 92, Republican candidate in the primary, said she would provide a conservative fiscal voice in the House.  She also said education would be one of her main interests if elected.

Joe Driscoll, Williamsburg, spoke on behalf of his wife new Senate District 46 which now includes Washington and Iowa counties and rural area of Johnson county.  If Senator Kevin Kinney decides not to run and if the Democrats do not nominate a candidate to run for Senate District 46, Dawn Driscoll would serve the remaining two years left on her senate seat she now holds.

Miller read letters of support for Jim Carlin who is running in the Republican candidate for U. S. Senate against Charles Grassley and Kevin Kuehl who is running against Rep. Mariannette Miller Meeks in the new 1st District.
