Kermith “Kerm” Earl Shettler

Kermith “Kerm” Earl Shettler, 78, of Sigourney, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023, at the Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney.
Kerm was born Aug. 28, 1944, in Iowa City, to Earl “Dick” and Mary (Slaubaugh) Shettler and graduated from English Valleys High School in 1963.  He then served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.  

On Oct. 22, 1966, he married Sharon Kay Renner at the Evangelical and Reformed Church in Sigourney.  The couple made their home in Sigourney where Kerm worked for Alliant Energy until his retirement in 2006.  

Kerm was a former member of the Jaycees and served on the Sigourney School Board as a member and as president. 

A faith-driven man, Kerm was a member of Sigourney Presbyterian Church, where he served on the Session, New Life Fellowship in Keswick, where he served as an elder, and had been attending Be The Light Ministry in Sigourney, Men’s Bible Study and various other church activities.  

  He was a huge Iowa Hawkeye fan and enjoyed hunting, fishing, being outdoors, golfing, gardening, traveling, fixing things and anything involving his granddaughter, Rylie.  Kerm especially enjoyed the annual Shettler Christmas cookie decorating contest.
Survivors include his wife: Sharon of Sigourney; two children: Tracie Lea (Mike) Miller of Dana and Steve (Staci) Shettler of Sigourney; granddaughter: Rylie Shettler of Sigourney; and two sisters: Mary Lois Shettler and Rachel Koehler, both of Washington.  

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister: Ruth Ann Shettler; and brothers: Don, Cecil, Carl, Fred and Gary Shettler.

Funeral service was held Monday, Jan. 16, 2023, at Be the Light Ministry in Sigourney, with Pastors Jaci Jarmes and Bob Renner officiating.  Burial with military rites was held at East Cemetery in Sigourney.
