Downed power lines in Kalona and Lone Tree caused power outages Sunday as a result of high winds from thunderstorms that that roared through east central Iowa Sunday afternoon and evening.
An Alliant Energy media spokesperson told the News Monday that there were 136 customers with power outages in Kalona from about 7 p.m. Sunday to 1:45 a.m. Monday.
Morgan Hawk said 950 Alliant Energy customers in the Lone Tree Area were also without power from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sunday. The area’s power outages Sunday were back online Monday.
Hawk said the outages were mainly due to downed tree branches and trees falling on live power lines. A live power line was down in back of Kalona Valley Senior Apartments at the intersection of 10th Street and H Avenue. Flames shot 20 to 39 feet in the air starting about 6:30 p.m. Kalona Volunteer Firemen were on the scene to make sure the bursts of flames didn’t cause damage to nearby residents.
There was another power outage in Kalona putting 100 customers in the dark starting at 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 9. Hawk said this outage was cause by an equipment (cable) issue that the crews fixed to have power back on about 2:15 p.m. to most of downtown.
Hawk pointed out that customers can find out information on power outages by going online to www.alliantenergy.com/outages.
