Kalona firemen extinguish fire at Perry Bender farm

The Kalona Volunteer Fire Dept. (KVFD) was called to the Perry Bender farm, 2710 560th Street SW, Kalona, at. 11:14 a.m. Monday, January 10, to extinguish a fire in a diesel shed at the goat dairy farm operated by tenant Amos Bender.

Kalona Fire Chief Jerry Zahradnek said the shed, which housed the diesel engine and cooling equipment for cooling milk, was totally engulfed in flames. The cause of the fire has not been determined, he said.  Estimated loss for the building and equipment was $15,000.

Zahradnek said the firemen were able to keep the fire from damaging the nearby barn where the goat dairy operation is housed. This was a dry time for milking goats, but the building and equipment will need to be replaced within three weeks when milking of the goats resumes.

Riverside fire

Chief Zahradnek reported that 22 Kalona volunteer firemen responded to the mutual aid call of a house fire at Riverside 12:58 a.m.  Saturday morning.

“We took a crew of 14 firemen and an engine to Riverside to assist in fighting the fire,” he said. “We left the remainder of the firemen on standby in Kalona.” Firemen returned to Kalona about 7:30 a.m.
