September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month. Each day in the US more than 900 children are diagnosed with a form of cancer. To make matters worse, less than 4% of research dollars go to help find a cure or treatment. Many treatment drugs for children that are used today were developed in the 1970s or earlier.

The Community Committees of both Mid-Prairie East and West Elementaries have decided to promote childhood cancer awareness in our schools and community to honor some of our very own survivors -- Pierce Duvall and Ariana Feltes, both 6 years old -- and on behalf of all the unnamed little heroes who have fought the disease and those who are still fighting it in our community and elsewhere.

On September 21, East Elementary did an all-school Childhood Cancer Awareness walk themed “Be Bold, Wear Gold” to show our support for those affected by it. Students also read the testimony of Pierce and Ariana. West Elementary will be collecting coins to donate to the UIHC Dance Marathon to support childhood cancer treatment research. We will also wear gold to show our support and read age-appropriate books to better understand why we need to support this cause. Students at West Elementary will also read the testimony of two of our current survivors.

If you would like to help our cause and help fight this terrible, family-devastating disease, please join us in our collection and donate your coins or spare change into one of our collection jars at the Wellman and Kalona Public Libraries between Monday, October 3, and Friday, October 14.

We hope you will join us in showing your love and support!
