RIVERSIDE

Highland Yahir Jimenez sprinted into the perfect position.

When the ball came his way late in last Friday’s soccer game against Wapello, Jimenez drilled the ball past Wapello goalkeeper Kainoa Seumanutafa and into the net. And for one moment in an icy game at Highland with temperatures in the 30s, one goal warmed the Huskies up.

The goal was the first of Jimenez’s high school career and prevented Wapello from ending the game early due to Iowa’s 10-goal mercy rule.

The loss was the fourth straight for the Huskies, but head coach Dylan Stewart was encouraged by the play he saw from the Huskies, as well as in a 5-0 loss to HIllcrest Academy the day before, April 7.

“I think we’re getting there,” Stewart said. “Today was another step forward, obviously. I think our last game yesterday [against Hillcrest], it was an even bigger one. We’re playing a little more physical, we’re staying in our formation, we’re starting to figure out where we need to be on the field.”

Daniel Perez, a quick-moving senior forward, scored seven goals for Wapello (1-4).

The Indians scored four goals in the first half and were cruising toward a mercy-rule victory in the second half when Jimenez scored his goal with 6:09 left in the game. Even before then, the Huskies (0-4) had a number of scoring chances that were stopped by Seumanutafa.

The Huskies and Ravens battled in a scoreless tie in the game played April 7 at Highland until Hillcrest freshman Diego scored two goals in less than a minute late in the first half.

Jorge Canchola added two goals for Hillcrest and Micah Gerber scored once as the Ravens won their first game of the season.

Hillcrest scored four times in the first half and added one goal in the second half.

“Hillcrest is a quality opponent,” Stewart said. “At 5-0, I thought we were still in the game the whole time.”

Highland senior keeper Eli Slaymaker had four saves.

Talen Whaley and Colin Pealer each scored three goals, leading Danville to a 10-0 victory over the Huskies on April 11.

Danville (1-2) scored seven goals in the first half. The Bears peppered Highland goalkeeper Eli Slaymaker with 18 shots on goal.

Pealer, a freshman, also had three assists. Danville senior Dakota Dietsch scored two goals and assisted on three.

The Huskies (0-5) play at Columbus next Monday, April 18.
