J.D. Boyd, 94, of Kalona, passed from this life on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025, at Parkview Manor in Wellman, joining his wife Carol who passed on Jan. 4, 2025. A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025, at 11 a.m., at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond. The service will be available via Livestream at the Beatty Peterseim Facebook and YouTube pages. Burial will follow at the Sharon Hill Cemetery in Kalona. The family will greet friends from 9 – 10:30 a.m., at the Parish Life Center adjacent to the church. A memorial fund has been established for the Kalona Volunteer Fire Department, Optimist Youth Programs and Parkview. The Beatty Peterseim Funeral Home is assisting the family.
J.D. was born May 16, 1930, in Brown County, Texas, the son of Oley “OW” and Ila (Gammon) Boyd. He graduated from Williams High School in Williams, Texas. On Oct. 26, 1949, he was united in marriage to Carol Stumpf at the rectory in Richmond. The couple celebrated 75 years of marriage in October. He worked at Reif’s Family Center installing flooring for 55 years and served as the mayor of Kalona for many years. J.D. was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Kalona Optimist Club and served on the Kalona Volunteer Fire Department for 36 years.
He was a great athlete, playing fast pitch softball, football and running track. J.D. was a Dallas Cowboys fan, had a sense of humor, and enjoying playing pranks on his coworkers. He was a family man that also volunteered countless hours for his community.
Survivors include four children: Sonja Triggs of Kalona, Greg (Connie) Boyd of Iowa City, Ron (Jonnine) Boyd of Kalona, and Diana Kvach of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren: Lara (Drew) Henderson, Alyson (Cam) Cecil, Danielle (Kyle) Johnson and Jayci Kvach; and four great-grandchildren: Boyd, Theo, Faye and Weston.
Preceding J.D. in death were his parents; his wife: Carol; his daughter: Rhonda; son-in-law: Gary Triggs; and five siblings: Oswald, Mathine, Alta, Bill and Wila Fern.
