WELLMAN
A career game started out perfectly Monday night for Mid-Prairie sophomore Izzy Kite.
So, she said, “I kept shooting.”
By the time the night was over, Kite had scored a career-high 17 points, hit a career-high five 3-pointers and led the Golden Hawks to a third consecutive 30-point-plus win, 66-30 over Mount Pleasant.
“I’m so proud of her for stepping up and hitting those shots,” Mid-Prairie head coach Danny Hershberger said.
Kite has stepped into a starting role this season for Mid-Prairie, having started in all 15 games as a guard on the perimeter. She has delivered some key shots for the Golden Hawks, including a 3-pointer in the final minute of a close game against Durant. Kite’s shot tied the game; seconds later, a 3-pointer by Morgyn Bender won it.
“She’s been huge for us in moments this year,” Hershberger said.
And Kite cherishes those moments.
“In those situations,” she said, “I want the ball.”
Monday night, Kite hit 6-of-9 shots, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range. Tessa Bombei, a freshman forward, added 11 points in Mid-Prairie’s fourth straight win.
The Golden Hawks have won their last three games by 36, 33 and 35 points. They essentially put Monday’s game away by outscoring the Panthers 16-4 in the opening quarter.
Senior forward Callie Huber was dominant in the paint, grabbing 8 rebounds and blocking 7 shots.
Mid-Prairie 65,
West Liberty 22
Mid-Prairie senior Callie Huber scored a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and sophomore guard Brooklyn Schneider scored a game-high 15 points in the Golden Hawks’ 33-point win last Friday.
The victory was the fifth straight for Mid-Prairie against River Valley South rival West Liberty, and its most lopsided against the Comets since 2017.
Mid-Prairie outscored West Liberty 17-4 in the opening quarter and cruised from there.
Freshman forward Tessa Bombei had 8 rebounds and freshman guard Jeorgia Evans had a game-high 4 steals.
Mid-Prairie 65,
West Branch 20
The Golden Hawks took command early in its 35-point win against West Branch on Jan. 21, allowing just 8 points in the first half while taking a 44-8 lead.
West Branch hit less than 20% of its shots and Mid-Prairie’s defense forced the Bears into 25 turnovers.
Callie Huber led the Golden Hawks with 15 points, and Jeorgia Evans and Morgyn Bender both came off the bench to score 11. Evans had a game-high 4 steals. Brylee Gearhart came off the bench to grab a game-high 8 rebounds.
Kennedy Simpson led West Branch with 9 points.
