Wapello and Highland entered their second meeting of the season sitting at fourth and fifth in the conference standings. But the Huskies flipped that around on Friday with a decisive 57-17 victory, sweeping the season series.
The Huskies took a six-point lead in the first quarter and then turned up the defensive pressure during a 17-2 second-quarter spurt.
“Our girls came out with some intensity right away,” Highland coach Jody Fink said. “A great all-around game for our girls. It’s hopefully a good confidence booster moving into next week.”
Sarah Burton had a great game, shooting 10-of-12 for 20 points, 11 rebounds, and eight steals.
“Sarah Burton was a focus tonight for us as we wanted to get the ball inside and focus on our inside out game,” Fink said. “She did a nice job for us overall.”
The Huskies continued to execute on both of ends of the floor in the third quarter, extending the lead to 47-13.
“The second and third quarters have been a little trouble for us this season but tonight it was a strength,” Fink said.
The Arrows were missing three starters, including their top rebounder Lindsy Massner, and leading scorer Tatum Wolford who reached the 145-pound final in the state wrestling tournament that weekend.
“You know, we were able to take advantage of that,” Fink said.
The Huskies forced 28 turnovers in the win.
Abbi Stransky finished with 10 points, 12 rebounds, six steals and four assists. Katelyn Waters had six points and four assists. Dani Laughlin was 3-of-8 from the 3-point line for nine points.
