Jameson Kasparek led Highland with a round of 49 in the first meet of the season on April 8, edged by one stroke for runner-up medalist honors in a 226-257 loss to Hillcrest at the Kalona Golf Course.

Both the Huskie boys and girls were in action the following day at the Kernoustie Golf Course in Mount Vernon, where Charlie Aicher led the Highland girls with a score of 51 in a 191-249 loss to Lisbon. Lisbon’s Kaylie Kelchen was the meet medalist with a score of 44.

Brock Schaedler had the low score with a 54 against Lisbon, who won 195-244 with meet medalist Brayden Boots leading the way with a round of 48.

“We’ve got seven first-year golfers and they are making big strides and having fun,” Highland golf coach Travis Riggan said after the opening week.

While the girls did not have an official competition on Thursday, they were able to play a practice round at the Kalona Golf Course in preparation for Friday.

“Before our meet against Hillcrest, I told both the boys and girls teams to put up a score, and we can work to improve from there,” Riggan said. “While on the road to Kernoustie in Mount Vernon, I was able to break down each golfer’s swing and give them things to keep in mind for our meet.”

Peyton Yeggy was able to improve his score by seven strokes, shooting a 56 on Friday. Isaac Black improved by 10 strokes, finishing with a 63 and Schaedler was 20 strokes better after shooting a 74 in Kalona. Kasparek rounded out the scoring on Friday with a total of 71.

Kelsi Cerny and Jenna Waters each finished with a score of 64 in their first official action of the season. Kerra Longbine shot a round of 70 and Allyana Pokorny finished with a 92.

“With our first two meets being back-to-back, I was happy to see the bounce back in our student athletes,” Riggan said. “I look at our boys and girls scores and can see a lot of growth potential once we head into our conference tournament in May.”
