Huskies defeat Lone Tree in three

After a tight first set, the Highland volleyball team took control of Tuesday’s match with Lone Tree in the second.

The Huskies opened up a 10-3 lead and went on to a 25-20, 25-13, 25-21 sweep of their rivals in the final game of the regular season.

“I think it was just the energy we had coming out of the first set,” said Highland senior Carsen Mellinger.  “We knew it was our game to win and we just played like we know how to play volleyball. And I think we were having fun, that was the main part of it.”

Highland had just a 20-19 lead late in the first set before taking five of the last six points to take the set and the momentum.

“A lot of times we collapse in on each other,” Mellinger said. “And I think when it got tough, we built ourselves up and pulled through it and just really played to the best of our abilities. I was really proud of them.”

Huskie senior Jalynn Brown had five kills in the sweep and finished the regular season with 81, second on the team to sophomore Sarah Burton who had 142. Mellinger finishes the regular season with 64 kills and 16 blocks.

It was the Huskies’ fourth straight win over Lone Tree and the third consecutive sweep in the series for Highland.

“It means a lot, knowing that I’ll never play volleyball in this gym again,” Mellinger said. “It’s nice ending on a win, and a big one against our rivals.”

Highland seniors Mackinze Hora, Delaney Gerot, and Emma Soukup combined for 10 aces in the victory.

Burton led the Huskies with six kills and 18 digs. Lorelei Lueck had three kills on four attempts with no errors.

Grace Prybil had a team-high 10 assists and MyLei Smith finished with six.

The Huskies wore pink jerseys on Tuesday for cancer awareness night, and Lone Tree wore pink shirts during warm ups as well.

Alivia Hemsted and Riley Krueger led the Lady Lions with six kills each. Ellen Carow had five and Kylie Patterson added three.

Hemsted, Krueger, and Carow combined for 32-of-35 serving with three aces. Patterson was 8-8 with an ace, but the Lions were just 84 percent  serving for the day.

Krueger and Alyssa Knock each had 13 digs while Ella Buser finished with 15 assists.

Highland (11-15) finished the season with a 25-13, 25-13, 25-20 loss to Winfield Mt. Union (21-10) on Monday in the first round of regional play.
