Highland’s baseball team is on a run that hasn’t been seen since 2017, when the Huskies won 21 games.
Saturday night, the Huskies won their 21st of the season with a dominating 11-1 win over Montezuma in the first round of the Class 1A postseason tournament.
Highland will host Southeast Iowa Super Conference rival Hillcrest Academy in the District 8 semifinals at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The winner will face Lynnville-Sully or North Mahaska in the district final July 9.
"They are a well-coached team," Highland head coach Seth Milledge said of Hillcrest. "They're going to put their best foot forward against you. They're not typically going to beat themselves. You have to go beat them."
The Huskies have won 16 of their last 18 games and averaged more than 13 runs a game in their last three games. Highland scored 11 runs in just four innings Saturday, ending its game early against Montezuma with a two-run rally in the fifth inning.
Ethan Paisley, and Logan and Brenton Bonebrake each had two hits. Paisley drove in a game-high four runs, including a bases-loaded double in the second inning that scored Highland’s first three runs of the game.
Starting pitcher Chase Schultz struck out six in 3.2 innings.
