SIGOURNEY
Highland High School’s soccer celebration arrived Thursday.
The Huskies broke a 19-game losing streak dating back nearly three years, defeating Sigourney-Keota 5-2 on the Cobras’ home field.
“It felt amazing,” said senior goalkeeper Eli Slaymaker. “All the hard work finally paid off.”
Highland had not won a soccer game since May 17, 2019, when the Huskies shut out Cedar Valley Christian, 1-0. Since then, the Huskies dropped 19 straight, including seven this year.
The Huskies scored five goals in one game for the first time since a 5-0 victory over Wapello in 2015.
Goals were scored by Jared Diaz, Yahir Jimenez and Ayden Havel.
After not scoring more than one goal in any game previously this season, the Huskies scored three times in the first half against Sigourney-Keota. They added two more goals in the second half.
The victory avenged a 4-1 loss to the Cobras in the second game of the season.
