Honoring Veterans and Cross Country

Observations

Last Saturday the Mid-Prairie girls cross country team won the state title for the 5th consecutive year and Danielle Hostetler  continued her sisters legacy by winning the sisters 6th consecutive individual title.  Both were fantastic accomplishments under coach Mark Hostetler.

On November 11, The News will publish a special section honoring both accomplishments. Thanks to the advertisers who are supporting this effort to properly honor and record for history the accomplishments of the girls cross country team and the Hostetler sisters.

Next week The News will also recognize the brave men and women of the Kalona, Wellman, Riverside and Lone Tree communities who have served  in the United States military. If you or if you know of  someone who has served and they aren’t in this section, please let us know so we can recognize them next year.

Again this section is made possible by some 80 area businesses and individuals who support this section with their sponsorship. Be sure to tell the military personnel thanks for their service and the advertisers thanks for making this recognition effort possible.

Monday night’s Kalona City council heard from Amy Schulte, CEO of the Washington County Y, which operates both the Kalona and Wellman Y’s,  that the Y is struggling to get back to its pre-Covid membership numbers.

We are sorry to hear that Alexandros on Highway 1 will be closing its doors permanently on Nov. 13. Owners cited age and the demand of time on staff to keep the restaurant operating six days a week.  Like most businesses, the challenge of getting  and keeping employees was another concern.

We wish the family the best in their future endeavors.

Building owner Merle Miller has already signed a lease with another family to operate another restaurant at that location.
