Call it 53 seconds of trouble.

Cedar Valley Christian scored two goals within 53 seconds early in the second half to break a 1-1 tie Saturday and sent the Ravens into scrambling mode for the next 31 minutes of a nonconference Class 1A soccer game.

The result was a 3-2 win, the second of the season, for Cedar Valley Christian.

“I was happy with the intensity that the guys showed,” Hillcrest head coach Marcus Miller said. “We just made a couple of mistakes that Cedar Valley capitalized on.”

Hillcrest junior Grant Bender cut into Cedar Valley’s lead by scoring on a penalty kick with 21:46 remaining. The Ravens (4-5) spent the rest of the game trying to push the ball upfield for the chance at an equalizing third goal.

“The mark of a young team,” Miller said. “Sometimes we had chances and the composure wasn’t there. Just fire off a shot.”

Cedar Valley senior Nati Kejella scored two goals, including what proved to be the game winner with 31:07 remaining in the game.

The Ravens played without senior midfielder Jorge Canchola, who was serving a one-game suspension following a red card ejection against Columbus on April 25.

“It was pretty obvious we missed him in the middle,” Miller said. “Seth Ours stepped up and did some really good things there. Grant Bender did some nice things there.”

Senior goalkeeper Aiden Krabill had seven saves for Hillcrest.

Ours scored his first high school goal in the first half.

The Ravens play at Mediapolis at 5 p.m. Thursday.
