The Hillcrest Ravens held their performance of Around the World in 80 Days this weekend, with a special twist. The three main (originally male) characters are played by females, and the damsel in distress is played by a male.

On this journey, we follow Phileas Fogg, played by Hannah Chalupa, and her French valet, Passepartout, played by Rebecca Farrier. What is this big journey of theirs, you ask? To travel around the world in 80 days -- the name of the play!

As the cast travels through Egypt, India, Hong Kong, Japan, the United States, and back to London, they are being chased by a detective who believes Fogg is a robber. Detective Fix is played by Naomi Danker, whose performance nails the mistaken, yet determined, detective.

While in India, the trio meet Aouda, played by Micah Kacmarynski, who is being forced to undergo sati, a Hindu practice. Fogg, Passepartout, and Fix decide to rescue Aouda and take him with them.

Each character, large or small, is played to a T by the actors, who not only memorized their lines, but memorized them in different accents.

At the end of the show, Fogg returns to London with his new companions, defeated because they had not made their circuit within 80 days. Fogg confesses to Aouda that he will have to live with a poor woman because of his lost wager. Before the ending is dubbed unhappy, Passepartout realizes that as they travelled eastward, their days were shortened by a few minutes, meaning Fogg had not lost his bet.

Congratulations are in order for Hillcrest’s cast and production of Around the World in 80 Days.
