The Huskies went on the road to take part in the WACO Warrior Invitational, a 16 school tournament, in Wayland on January 14 and Highland senior state ranked wrestler Carlos Valenzuela continued to add accolades to his already impressive season with a first place finish at the tourney.

Earning his spot at the top of the podium after winning three consecutive matches Valenzeula started off the tournament with a bye. After the bye came the quarterfinal round and he was able to claim a victory by fall in one minute and 54 seconds over Wayne’s Cooper Anderson.

In the next round, the semifinals, he was able to pick up the victory thanks to a narrow 5-4 decision over Prairie, Cedar Rapids’ Aiden Kirk.

Finally in his last match of the day, the first place match, Valenzuela earned his first place medal in a fairly quick fashion with a win by fall in 42 seconds over Eddyville-Blakeburg-Fremont’s Tyler Schutt. Overall Valenzuela collected 26 team points for Highland with his three straight victories and first place finish in the 132 lbs bracket.

Another medal earner for the Huskies at this tournament was state ranked wrestler Luke Guseman who took home a third place finish in the 120 lbs bracket.

Guseman began the tournament with a bye in the first round and in his first match after the bye he was able to win by decision, 10-3, over Mediapolis’ Grant Kennedy.

He then proceeded to be defeated in the semifinal round by fall in three minutes and 28 seconds to Eddyville-Blakeburg-Fremont’s Landon Davis. Despite the loss Guseman still qualified to participate in the third place match.

Guseman ended up winning the third place match by injury over Wapello’s Dawson Tipps. When it was all said and done Guseman received a third place medal in the 120 lbs bracket and earned 15 team points for Highland.

Other Highland wrestlers who finished outside of the top three were Brock Thomann, who placed fifth in the 126 lbs bracket, and Jack Peiffer, also placing fifth in the 138 lbs bracket.

Thomann won his fifth place match by decision, 9-4, over Mid-Prairie’s Colin O`Rourke and Peiffer won his fifth place match by major decision, 11-2, over Mediapolis’ Peyton Johnson.
