Highland students win Auxiliary essay contest

The VFW Auxiliary to Post No. 6414 Riverside held their annual Elementary Essay Contest presentation Monday, January 23, 2023, at the Highland Elementary School in Riverside.  Monetary awards and citations were presented to the winners and participants. 

This year, essays were submitted by fourth and fifth graders. The winning essay topic and winners are as listed: Fourth grade, “What is Your Favorite Patriotic Holiday and Why?” – 1st Place Kameron Eldridge, 2nd Place Carson Murphy; Fifth grade, “I’m Proud to be an American Because…” – 1st Place Hailey Carvajal, 2nd Place Anna Piette.  All essay participants and their teachers were recognized.

The morning assembly also included a “Patriotism through Literacy” project where books written to promote events in our nation’s history are donated to the school library and the reading of the POW/MIA Ceremony. 

The Elementary Essay Contest and Patriotism Through Literacy are projects under the VFW Auxiliary Americanism and Youth Activities Programs.  Congratulations to the winning students.
