The Highland School Board approved a tax-rate certification for 2024-25 that is under $13 per $1,000 of assessed property.
The approval came during the Board’s regularly scheduled meeting Monday.
The precise rate is $12.95455.
Ken Crawford, Superintendent of Highland Schools, said the rate has dropped every year in recent school years.
Property taxes are projected to produce $4.67 million for the district, which also receives state and federal funds.
Teacher Day
The new school year began Friday with new teachers arriving at their schools for in-service training.
High School/Middle School Principal Angela Hazelett and Elementary School Principal Jane O’Leary said they have already met with first-year teachers to begin the training and planning process. New hires at Highland Elementary include a pair of 2024 University of Iowa graduates.
In-service days continue next week with the first day of school for students set for Friday, August 23.
“Unpack your Backpack” day is set for 5 to 6 p.m. August 22 at Highland Elementary.
Monday, while the School Board met to talk about the new year, the Huskies football team was already in the practice fields behind the school for its first day of practice. Monday was the first practice day for all fall sports.
Board Actions
The Board approved the Administration Regulations handbook.
The Board approved a request by Superintendent Ken Crawford to bid out and sell obsolete equipment, including old wrestling mats, a weight scale and a wood planer.
The Board approved the appointment of Logan Moeller, Junior High football coach and Junior High girls basketball coach.
The Board approved a number of policy updates.
Next Meeting
The board will hold its next formal meeting at 5 p.m. September 9. A work session is planned for August 26.
