RIVERSIDE
A second year of four-day school weeks was approved by the Highland School Board at its regularly scheduled meeting April 14.
The 2025-26 Highland Community Schools calendar includes 32 four-day weeks for students.
The school year will begin Monday, August 25, with the last day of school scheduled for Thursday, May 28.
A two-week winter break begins Monday, December 22, and a three-day spring break begins Wednesday, March 18.
Friday in-school days were set for September 5 and 12, November 21 and April 10.
In-service work days for teachers will begin Tuesday, August 19.
FY26 Budget
The Board approved the Fiscal Year 2026 budget that includes $11.9 million in total expenditures, an increase of about $1,100 from the current school year.
Instruction spending, or teacher salaries, is increasing from $6 million to $6.2 million.
Total expected revenues are $11.7 million, including $4.7 million in property taxes and $3.9 million in state funds.
New Board
Dennis Wendt was appointed as a new board member in District 2.
Wendt replaces John O’Leary, who has moved out of the District 2 geographical area.
Wendt joins Aaron Friederich, a Vice President at GreenState Credit Union and a volunteer assistant football coach at Highland, as new members on the board this year.
Both seats will be up for election next November.
Board Action
The Board approved the appointments of Dan Brandstetter, Junior High baseball coach, and Mario Lopez, High School assistant soccer coach.
The Board approved the job description for Junior High Sports Coach.
The Board approved a number of policy updates.
Next Meeting
The board will hold its next formal meeting at 5 p.m. May 12.
