The Highland boys golf team opened the season with a 195-197 win over Hillcrest in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference dual at Blue Top Ridge on Monday.

Senior Chase Schultz was the meet medalist with 44 strokes and junior Peyton Yeggy was the runner-up on a tiebreaker with 45.

“The conditions were pretty good other than some soggy spots in the fairway's due to rain on days prior,” said coach Travis Riggan, whose Huskies hosted the opening day meet.

“Chase Schultz and Peyton Yeggy led the way for us, both shooting in the mid 40s and a strong performance from freshman Colton Sypherd helped us get the win tonight.”

Sypherd finished with a total of 50 and senior Kaige Vonnahme shot a 56 to round out the scoring for Highland.

Freshman Liam Schrock and junior Jace Rempel led the Ravens with 45 strokes each. All five Hillcrest golfers shot under 60 to open the season.

“Last year it took several meets before we dipped below 200 as a team,” Hillcrest coach Phil Schintler said. “A 197 was very respectable right out of the gate. The Ravens will be fun to watch this year!”

Liam Schrock and Rempel each had three pars in the opener. Luke Schrock had two pars and a birdie on his way to a  total of 52 and senior Alex Niemeyer shot a 55 to round out the scoring. Josiah Beachy had 59 strokes over the nine holes.

“Alex had one of the most consistent shots and better drives since last year,” Schintler said. “Josiah has improved greatly on his drives as well.”

Trevor McFarland finished with 60 strokes for the Huskies and his fellow senior Luke Miller opened the season with a 71.

Both the Highland boys and girls teams will be on the road Thursday to face Louisa-Muscatine, while the Ravens will host Wapello.

The Highland, Hillcrest and Lone Tree boys teams will compete in an 18-hole tournament hosted by Mediapolis on Saturday at Heritage Oaks Golf Course.
