Highland and WMU wait to resume regional semifinal

Huskies and Wolves tied 0-0 in the sixth, set to resume Monday

The Winfield-Mount Union softball team moved the go-ahead run to third base as dark clouds rolled in from the West on Friday.

The Wolves and Huskies were still scoreless in the bottom of the sixth when Carlee Sloan led off the inning with a double for WMU. Kayreanna Sharar’s sacrifice bunt put Sloan just 60 feet away from home plate.

Now she’s stuck there for 71 hours.

In the scorebook, anyway.

Highland and WMU will resume play at 5:00 on Monday with Sloan at third base. There will be one out in the bottom of the sixth inning and Anna Anderson will be back in the box, facing an 0-2 count.

The two starting pitchers and the defenses behind them have been the stars of the game so far.

Highland's Grace Batcheller has allowed six hits and no walks while WMU starter Madie Anderson has allowed three hits, no walks, and has struck out 13.

The Huskies’ best scoring chance came in the first inning, when Payton Brun stole second and third base after her one-out single, but Anderson ended the inning with a strikeout.

In the second inning, the Wolves received the benefit of a close call at second base when Sharar tried to stretch a single into a double. But the Huskie defense responded by turning a double play to end the inning.

Brun caught a line drive at first base and fired the ball to Sarah Burton at second for a big out.

Molly Miller led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single for WMU, but the Huskie defense came up with a big play again. This time it was Burton who caught the line drive and threw to Brun to double off the runner.

Sarah Burton and Jessica Kraus each have a hit for the Huskies. Kraus relieved Batcheller after 5 and 1-3 innings. Kraus threw just three pitches (all strikes) before the game was suspended.
