Highland 4x100 qualifies for Drake Relays at deadline

Posted

After a miserable spring, the Highland girls 4x100-meter relay was gifted a perfect evening on Thursday — the last chance to qualify for the Drake Relays.

They took full advantage.

Grace Prybil, Sarah Burton, Katelyn Waters, Mackenzie McFarland took 1.36 seconds off of their previous best to win the event by nearly two seconds. The time of 52.61 put the Huskies into the field of 96 on Friday at Drake Stadium.

The Huskies added Prybil, a sophomore, to the relay with the state meet veterans Burton, Waters and McFarland this year.

“She's really fast, she's really good,” McFarland said. “We're just working on handoffs, getting used to who gives to who, and which are better, faster (combinations).”

The Huskies found the right mix in the 4x200 as well, as Highland blew away the rest of the field by over seven seconds with a time of 1:52.31.

“I think we ran faster last year, but it was only by a second,” McFarland said afterwards. “But that was our fastest time this year. We all did pretty good, and our splits were good too.”

Burton took gold in the long jump with a distance of 16-9.75. Her PR of 17-2.25 at Mediapolis on April 5 qualified her for the 112th Drake Relays in Des Moines on April 29.

Highland’s other individual first-place finish belonged to McFarland, who won the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.50.

“It's been cold lately, so I haven’t been running my best times,” she said. So, I'm glad I was able to run my best 100 of this year. I like the warm weather. It feels way better to run in.”

Jessica Kraus had a second-place showing in the discus with a new PR of 101-08 and the 4x800 of Avery Pierson, Emma Soukup, Hailey Netser and Kylie Allen took second as well.

The Highland girls finished fourth out of eight teams. The Highland boys finished sixth in the standings led by second-place finishes from Connor Grinstead, Logan Bonebrake and Devin Lovetinsky.

Grinstead set a new personal record with a time of 23.40, which ranks 17th in class 1A this year. Lovetinksy set a new PR in the shot put with a throw of 48 feet. Bonebrake jumped six feet to equal his best career jump.

The three Huskies finished second to New London athletes who rank 1, 2, and 3 in the 1A high jump, shot put, and 200, respectively.

The Highland 4x200-meter relay of Tyler Thompson, Brenton Bonebrake, Logan Bonebrake, and Grinstead took over two seconds off its previous best to finish second in 1:35.24, which is the 11th best time in 1A this season.

Sullivan Fowler finished sixth in the 100-meter dash with a new season best of 12.33. Nicolas Oriano set a new season best of 19.71 in the 110-meter hurdles and freshman William Dunbar had his best finish of the season with a time of 5:54 in the 1600-meter run.
