Hershberger wraps up career on Drake's blue oval

Aaron Hershberger wrapped up his track & field career at Drake Stadium on Friday, competing in the 110 and 400-meter hurdle races, just 90 minutes apart.

He finished 17th in the 110-meter race with a time of 16.39 and 16th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.09.

Hershberger passed a couple runners on the frontstretch of the 400 to finish fourth out of eight in the second heat.

“The wind was pretty strong,” Hershberger said. “I could definitely feel it hopping over those hurdles. But that’s usually my specialty — the last 100 meters, and I kicked it in.”

It was the first trip to the state meet for the Raven senior.

“It was a good experience,” he said. “Not one of my best races but I tried my best. That’s all I can ask for. I bumped up two places from where I was ranked in the 110s. So I was happy with that.”

Hershberger qualified for the state meet with a career-best time of 57.65 at WACO on May 13. He also is a member of the school-record holding shuttle hurdle relay, which set the new Raven standard in the conference meet on May 6.

“Aaron has been a dedicated track and field athlete for the past four years,” coach Marty Gingerich said. “He has trained diligently each season improving his strength and speed each year.

“Being able to participate in the state meet was a celebration of Aaron fully developing the gifts God has given him to run fast and jump over hurdles.”
